It is a two-storey building of red brick with a roof of stone flags and two staircases on the outside. Inside, a gallery runs round three sides and the pulpit stands against a long wall; the pulpit is late 17th or early 18th century, the pews from 1859. Mrs Gaskell, the novelist, was buried here after her death in 1865. Her husband William (died 1884) and their two daughters, neither of whom married, also lie here; the daughters died in 1908 and 1913.
