Sir William Sharington then bought the property and made the convent his family's home. Fortified in the Civil War, it stayed loyal to the crown until it surrendered once Devizes fell in 1645. The house later passed to the Talbots. Henry Fox Talbot photographed one of its windows in 1835, producing what may be the oldest camera negative to survive.
