About Colchester Castle
Built by the Normans in the later eleventh century, Colchester Castle stands in Castle Park in Colchester, Essex, and gave the park its name. William the Conqueror commissioned it, with Gundulf as architect. Its keep survives largely complete and is the biggest of its type in Europe, because it sits on the foundations left by the Romans' Temple of Claudius. In 1216 it went through a siege lasting three months. By the seventeenth century it was decaying, and the curtain walls and parts of the keep's top were pulled down; how tall it first stood is still debated. Later a prison, it was bought by the borough council in 1922. Colchester Museum, known for its Roman finds, has been inside since 1860.
