It was founded in 1224 on land given by King Alexander II, taking over from the cathedral at Spynie, and the bishops of Moray had their seat here; in Scotland only St Andrews was larger. A fire in 1270 led to a major phase of building, and another followed after Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan, the Wolf of Badenoch, attacked it with fire in 1390. Decline began with the Reformation in 1560, and in 1567 the Privy Council had the lead stripped from the roof to pay for the army. The choir roof fell in 1637, and the central tower's collapse in 1711 wrecked most of the nave. Historic Environment Scotland looks after it.

What's in the pack

Ten folded cards, all of this design, with ten envelopes: A6 (14.8 × 10.5 cm), on 350gsm silk card.

Inside: “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year”, with room to write your own message.

On the back: the Here Looks Good plate.

Prefer it on the wall? Elgin Cathedral Poster. See all our Christmas cards.

Free UK standard delivery.
