About Spanish City
The Spanish City in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, was modelled as a smaller Blackpool Pleasure Beach. It opened in 1910 with a restaurant, tearoom, concert hall and roof garden, gained a ballroom in 1920 and, later on, a permanent funfair. Close to the seafront, it has a 180 ft Renaissance-style front, and the building, known for its distinctive dome, is Grade II listed. Copper figures of women, half life size, stand on the towers either side of the entrance, one with cymbals and one with a tambourine. Dire Straits named it in "Tunnel of Love" in 1980, and the song was then played there every morning at opening. It closed in the early 2000s, then reopened at the end of July 2018 as a dining and leisure centre.
