About Criccieth Castle
Criccieth Castle is a ruined 13th-century castle on a rocky headland above Tremadog Bay in Gwynedd. Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, prince of Gwynedd, began it in the 1230s, and his grandson Llywelyn ap Gruffudd probably added the outer ward. Edward I captured it in 1283 and raised its towers and inner gatehouse. It was besieged in 1294–95 during Madog ap Llywelyn's failed revolt, captured in 1404 in Owain Glyndŵr's rising, and in ruins by the 1450s. The twin-towered gatehouse still stands almost to its full height. J. M. W. Turner sketched the castle in 1798. It is Grade I listed and cared for by Cadw.
