About Rochdale Town Hall
Rochdale Town Hall, a civic building from the Victorian era in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, is the ceremonial home of the borough council and holds its register office. William Henry Crossland won an 1864 competition to design it, and the Gothic Revival building opened on 27 September 1871. Its first clock tower, 240 feet (73 m) tall, carried a wooden spire and a gilded figure of Saint George and the Dragon; fire destroyed both on 10 April 1883, and for four years there was no spire. In 1887 a stone clock tower and spire 190 feet (58 m) high went up, designed by Alfred Waterhouse in the manner of Manchester Town Hall. Its stained glass is highly praised, and it is Grade I listed.
