About Audley End House
Audley End House, close to Saffron Walden in the north-west of Essex, is a Jacobean country house of the early 17th century. Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk, built it where a Benedictine monastery had stood, land granted to his grandfather, the chancellor Thomas Audley, when the monasteries were dissolved. He pulled down Audley's Tudor mansion, raised a palace-sized house and entertained King James I there. Charles II bought it in 1666, but in 1701 the earls of Suffolk had it back. Large parts were knocked down during the 18th century, leaving about a third of the original. In the Second World War it was a training base for Polish SOE agents. English Heritage now manages the house, and Capability Brown landscaped its park.
