About Dunnottar Castle
Dunnottar Castle is a ruined medieval fortress on a rocky headland on Scotland's north-east coast, about 2 miles south of Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire. Its Gaelic name, Dùn Fhoithear, means "fort on the shelving slope". People are thought to have fortified the site as early as the Early Middle Ages, though most of what survives is 15th and 16th-century. In the 17th century the Honours of Scotland were hidden here from Oliver Cromwell's invading army. From the 14th century the Keiths owned it, and it was the seat of the Earl Marischal, but it went into decline after the last Earl joined the Jacobite rebellion of 1715 and forfeited his titles. Restored in the 20th century, it is open to the public, with cliffs dropping 160 feet to the North Sea.
