About Stonehenge
Stonehenge is a prehistoric stone monument on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, about two miles west of Amesbury. It went up in phases, from about 3100 BC to about 1600 BC. The circular bank and ditch came first, around 3100 BC. The great ring of sarsens followed between 2600 BC and 2400 BC: uprights roughly 13 feet tall, capped with lintels held by mortise and tenon joints. The smaller bluestones reached their present places between 2400 and 2200 BC, though they may have been on site by 3000 BC. Human bone found here suggests it may have been a burial ground from the start. Now ruined, it lines up with the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset. It became a World Heritage Site in 1986 and is managed by English Heritage.
