About Royal Border Bridge
The Royal Border Bridge is a railway viaduct over the River Tweed in Northumberland, linking Berwick-upon-Tweed with Tweedmouth. Robert Stephenson, son of the railway pioneer George Stephenson, designed it for the York, Newcastle & Berwick line. It was built between 1847 and 1850, and Queen Victoria opened it. The bridge is 659 metres long, built of stone with brick on the undersides of its 28 arches, each spanning 60 feet, and carries the line 37 metres above the river. It still serves the East Coast Main Line, was electrified in 1989 and had its first major repairs between 1993 and 1996. Despite the name, the border with Scotland is about three miles further north. It is Grade I listed.
