William Henry Crossland won an 1864 competition to design it, and the Gothic Revival building opened on 27 September 1871. Its first clock tower, 240 feet (73 m) tall, carried a wooden spire and a gilded figure of Saint George and the Dragon; fire destroyed both on 10 April 1883, and for four years there was no spire. In 1887 a stone clock tower and spire 190 feet (58 m) high went up, designed by Alfred Waterhouse in the manner of Manchester Town Hall.
