About Burghley House
Burghley House is a grand 16th-century country house near Stamford, Lincolnshire, standing 0.9 miles south of the town. William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley, commissioned it, and it was built by the Cecil family, whose senior line, the Exeter branch, still lives there. It ranks as a leading Elizabethan prodigy house. Outside it still looks largely Elizabethan, while most of the rooms were remodelled before 1800. Capability Brown laid out the park. The house opens to visitors in season, showing a run of richly furnished state apartments. The Burghley House Preservation Trust, controlled by the Cecils, runs it. It is Grade I listed.
