About Barry Island
Barry Island, Ynys y Barri in Welsh, is a peninsula, district and seaside resort forming part of Barry, a town in the Vale of Glamorgan. Its name comes from Saint Baruc, who lived in the 6th century. Until the 1870s it really was cut off by water; then the growing town joined it to the mainland, partly because the Barry Railway Company opened Barry Docks; the docks, set up by David Davies, now fill the old gap. Here the Bristol Channel has a tidal range of 15 metres, second in the world only to the Bay of Fundy. Once home to a Butlins camp, it is now best known for its beach and Pleasure Park. The BBC used it as a setting for Gavin & Stacey and Being Human.
