About Dudley Castle
Dudley Castle is a ruin in the West Midlands town of Dudley. It began soon after the Norman Conquest as a timber motte and bailey castle. In the twelfth century it was rebuilt in stone, only for Henry II to order it pulled down. A second rebuilding came in the later thirteenth century, and that work was crowned by a range of buildings John Dudley put up inside the walls. Parliament had the defences slighted in the Civil War, and fire destroyed the living quarters in 1750. Today Dudley Zoo occupies the grounds. The castle is Grade I listed, and in 2020 structural problems put it on the Heritage at Risk register kept by Historic England.
