The Victorian dinosaur sculptures of Crystal Palace Park among the trees and water, as a retro railway poster in autumn colours.
About Crystal Palace Dinosaurs
In Crystal Palace Park in South London stands a set of sculptures of dinosaurs and other long-extinct creatures. Commissioned in 1852 for the Crystal Palace once it had moved from Hyde Park, where it housed the Great Exhibition, they were revealed in 1854, the world's first sculptures of dinosaurs. Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins made the designs, and Sir Richard Owen advised on the science. They show 15 genera, but just three are true dinosaurs; ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs and a few mammals are among the rest. Built on the knowledge of the time, they are inaccurate today, the Iguanodon and Megalosaurus especially. Grade II listed from 1973, they were restored in 2002, and in 2007 they moved up to Grade I.
