About Bognor Regis Pier
Bognor Regis Pier, in the West Sussex resort of Bognor Regis, opened on 5 May 1865, designed by Sir Charles Fox with J. W. Wilson. It was first 1000 ft long; today it measures 350 ft. A pavilion was added in 1900. In the Second World War the Royal Navy used it as an observation station called HMS St Barbara. Storms wrecked the pavilion in 1964 and 1965, and fires in 1974 led to its closure. It was listed at Grade II in 1989, yet it kept declining. Each summer it hosts the International Bognor Birdman, where competitors in home-made flying machines launch from the end of the pier to see who can glide furthest. The event began in Selsey in 1971 and moved here in 1978.
