About Pharos Lighthouse
The Pharos Lighthouse, officially named the Upper Lighthouse, is a red Runcorn sandstone tower 93 feet tall in Fleetwood, Lancashire. Decimus Burton, the architect Sir Peter Hesketh Fleetwood had hired to plan his new town, designed it in 1839 with Captain H. M. Denham, and it was finished in 1840. Its nickname comes from the ancient lighthouse at Alexandria. Rare among British lighthouses still in use, it rises from the middle of a street of houses, Pharos Street. It works as a pair with the shorter Lower Lighthouse on the seafront: ships keep the Pharos light directly above the lower one to steer safely through the sandbanks of the Wyre estuary. Both were first lit on 1 December 1840.
