About Loughborough Carillon
Standing 152 feet (46 m) high in Queen's Park, the Loughborough Carillon serves both as a war memorial and as a tower for its bells, and it can be seen from several miles away. Plans were settled in 1919, and on completion in 1923 it was England's first four-octave carillon, an instrument associated with Belgium, where many British servicemen had died in the Great War. Sir Walter Tapper designed it, William Moss and Sons built it, and all 47 bells were cast at the John Taylor Bell Foundry in the town. At the dedication on 22 July 1923 the carillonneur Jef Denyn played, and Edward Elgar wrote Memorial Chimes for the day; its manuscript was rediscovered in 2012. It is Grade II listed.
