About Warkworth Castle
Warkworth Castle stands in ruins in the Northumberland village of Warkworth, inside a bend of the River Coquet under a mile from the coast. Its founder is uncertain: tradition names Prince Henry of Scotland in the mid-12th century, though Henry II of England may have built it. The earliest record is a charter dated 1157–1164, by which Henry II gave it to Roger fitz Richard. That timber castle was judged "feeble", and nobody defended it when the Scots invaded in 1173. In 1345 the 2nd Baron Percy of Alnwick gained control, and late in the 14th century Henry Percy, the 1st Earl of Northumberland, built the imposing keep above the village. English Heritage has looked after it since 1984.
