About St Giles' Church
St Giles' Church, Eglwys San Silyn in Welsh, is the parish church of Wrexham and is Grade I listed. Christians have worshipped on the site for at least 800 years, and the main body of today's church dates from the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Its 16th-century tower rises 41 m (136 feet), can be seen for miles, and is counted among the 'Seven Wonders of Wales'. Inside are carvings and statues going back to the 14th century, monuments by Woolner and Roubiliac, a stained-glass window said to be by Burne-Jones, and one of Britain's oldest brass eagle lecterns. Elihu Yale, benefactor of Yale University, lies in the churchyard, and the university's Wrexham Tower was modelled on the church's.
