About Stockport Viaduct
Also known as the Edgeley Viaduct, Stockport Viaduct takes the West Coast Main Line across the Mersey valley in Stockport, Greater Manchester, just north of the railway station. George W. Buck designed it for the Manchester and Birmingham Railway, consulting the architect John Lowe. Work started in March 1839 and, despite its size and floods from the river, it was finished in December 1840, with trains running that month. Around 11 million bricks went into it, and when completed it was the largest viaduct in the world. It is 33.85 metres high and still among the biggest brick structures anywhere. It was widened to four tracks in the late 1880s, the M60 now runs through two of its arches, and it has been Grade II* listed since March 1975.
