About Ashby de la Zouch Castle
The ruined castle at Ashby-de-la-Zouch stands in the Leicestershire town that shares its name. William, Lord Hastings, a favourite of King Edward IV, built it after 1473 where an older manor house had stood, and laid out a 3,000-acre park with it. Two great towers and smaller buildings were up by 1483, the year Richard, Duke of Gloucester had Hastings executed. In the Civil War, Henry Hastings made it his Royalist base until a long siege forced him to give it up. After a new rising in 1648, Parliament slighted the castle, wrecking both towers with gunpowder and undermining. Walter Scott's novel Ivanhoe of 1819 brought it fame, and its owner, Francis Rawdon, let visitors see the ruins. English Heritage runs it today.
