About Framlingham Castle
Framlingham Castle stands in the Suffolk market town of Framlingham. A Norman castle was here by 1148, but Henry II had it slighted after the revolt of 1173–1174. Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, built its replacement, which unusually for its day had no central keep; a curtain wall with thirteen towers defended it instead. Even so, King John took it after a brief siege in 1216. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries it was at the centre of the Mowbray and Howard estates and was enlarged in brick, with pleasure gardens inside. Pembroke College, Cambridge, received it as a gift in 1636, and it later housed a poor law workhouse until 1839. English Heritage now runs it, and it is Grade I listed.
