About Lichfield Cathedral
Lichfield Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Mary and Saint Chad, is the Church of England cathedral of the city of Lichfield and the seat of its bishop, with services every day. Mercia's diocese dates from 656; in 700 a cathedral was consecrated where the present one stands. Chad, its fifth bishop, had his relics kept here until 1538. The present building went up in the Decorated Gothic style, from the early 13th century to about 1320, probably starting with the choir at its east end. In the Civil War the Close was besieged three times and the church lost all its medieval glass. Much detail today comes from George Gilbert Scott's restorations, needed because of the soft sandstone and war damage. It is Grade I listed.
