About Arbeia
Arbeia, in South Shields, Tyne & Wear, was once a large Roman fort. Today it is a ruin, with parts of it rebuilt. The site was first excavated in the 1870s, and in the 1970s every modern building standing on it was cleared away. North East Museums now runs it as Arbeia, South Shields Roman Fort. It is a scheduled monument and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
