About St Albans Cathedral
St Albans Cathedral, often just called "the Abbey" and named after Saint Alban, serves the Church of England in St Albans. Its foundation probably goes back to the 8th century. Much of what stands today is Norman, or Romanesque, building of the 11th century, later added to in Gothic times and in the 19th century. The abbey was dissolved in the 16th century, and the church became a cathedral in 1877. It differs from most English cathedrals in also serving as a parish church, with the dean acting as its rector. The building is Grade I listed and a scheduled monument.
