About Caerphilly Castle
Caerphilly Castle, Castell Caerffili in Welsh, is a medieval fortress in Caerphilly, South Wales, covering around 30 acres. Gilbert de Clare began it in 1268, after taking the north of Glamorgan, to keep his hold on the region. His Welsh rival Llywelyn ap Gruffudd opposed it, the site was burnt in 1270 and royal officials took it over in 1271, yet Gilbert finished it. Its core sits on an island ringed by artificial lakes, and its rings of walls brought concentric defences to Britain and were a model for the castles Edward I built in North Wales. It is the largest castle in Wales. It declined from the late 15th century, the Marquesses of Bute restored it, and in 1950 it passed to the state. Cadw now manages it.
