About Tamworth Castle
Tamworth Castle is a Norman castle in Tamworth, Staffordshire, looking over the spot where the River Anker flows into the Tame. Until boundary changes in 1889 it lay just inside Warwickshire, while most of the town was in Staffordshire. In Anglo-Saxon times the site was a residence of the kings of Mercia, but it fell out of use during the Viking invasions. The Normans fortified it again and it was enlarged later, and today few motte-and-bailey castles in England survive in better condition. It is also a museum, and it is Grade I listed and a scheduled monument.
