About Lewes Castle
Standing in Lewes, East Sussex, this medieval castle was first known as Bray Castle. It sits on a man-made mound just north of the town's high street, its walls of local flint and limestone blocks, and it commands the gap the River Ouse cuts through the South Downs, where Lewes and Cliffe stand. William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey, commissioned and owned it. It is Grade I listed and a scheduled monument.
