About Blenheim Palace
Blenheim Palace, in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, is where Sir Winston Churchill was born and where the Dukes of Marlborough have their seat. Named after the Battle of Blenheim of 1704, it was meant as a reward to the 1st Duke for his victories over the French and Bavarians. Building ran from 1705 to 1722, with some money from Queen Anne. The work soon became mired in political rows: the Crown stopped paying in 1712, and the architect Sir John Vanbrugh's reputation suffered lasting harm. Its rare English Baroque style still divides opinion. Late in the 19th century the 9th Duke's marriage to Consuelo Vanderbilt, an American railroad heiress, saved it from ruin. In 1987 UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site.
