Retro railway-poster illustration of Beaumaris Castle in Beaumaris, a low view of its round battlemented towers and curtain walls rising from the moat, their reflections in the water, with swans swimming and a strip of green fields behind.
Beaumaris Castle, on Anglesey, was part of Edward I's drive to win north Wales after 1282. Plans for it were probably first drawn up in 1284, but money was short, and building only began in 1295, after the Madog ap Llywelyn uprising, with James of St George in charge of a large workforce. Edward's invasion of Scotland then took the funds, and work stopped until an invasion scare in 1306. When it ended around 1330, some 15,000 pounds had been spent and the castle was still unfinished. Its plan is concentric and symmetrical: a moated outer ward with twelve towers and two gatehouses, and an inner ward with two big D-shaped gatehouses and six huge towers. Ships could reach its south gate. It is now a World Heritage Site.
