Retro railway-poster illustration of Ancient Priors in Crawley, a front view of the black-and-white timber-framed building with two gables, tiled roof, central brick chimney and leaded windows, with outdoor café tables, a street lamp and the road in front.
The Ancient Priors is a timber-framed medieval hall house on Crawley's High Street in West Sussex. It went up in about 1450, partly in place of an earlier building, probably from the 14th century, some of which still stands behind the street front. Over the centuries it has been enlarged and altered again and again, and by the 1930s it was in such poor shape that knocking it down was discussed. Instead it was restored, and today it is a restaurant. Hidden rooms found in the 19th century have never been fully explained. It is Grade II* listed, and it has been praised as the finest house of its kind between London and Brighton.
