See our earlier sample in a real homeEly Cathedral, Cambridgeshire — drawn in our Retro Railway style from a real photograph of the real place, reimagined with AI.
Retro railway-poster illustration of Ely Cathedral: the tall west tower with corner turrets and a clock face, rows of arched windows across the front, a round battlemented turret to the right, a lamp post and a curving drive with lawns in front.
St Æthelthryth, also called Etheldreda, founded an abbey at Ely in 672, and the cathedral grew from it. Building work that survives began in 1083, and the church became a cathedral in 1109. It began as massive Romanesque; later the choir, lady chapel and galilee porch were remade in Decorated Gothic. Its best-known feature is the eight-sided central tower crowned by a lantern, which with the West Tower stands out across the surrounding landscape. It is the seat of the Bishop of Ely, is Grade I listed and welcomes around 250,000 visitors a year.
