About Orford Castle
Orford Castle stands in Orford, Suffolk, 12 miles (19 km) north-east of Ipswich, looking out over Orford Ness. Henry II built it between 1165 and 1173 to strengthen royal power in the area. Its keep survives in good condition and is of a design found nowhere else, possibly modelled on Byzantine buildings; the historian R. Allen Brown ranked it among England's most remarkable keeps. Around it lie the earthworks left from the castle's outer defences. The castle is Grade I listed.
