Retro railway-poster illustration of Knole, Sevenoaks, seen head-on across a lawn: a crenellated stone gatehouse with twin towers and an arched entrance, long battlemented wings with mullioned windows and tall brick chimneys, benches along the front and a blue sky.
Knole is an English country house in west Kent that was once an archbishop's palace and now belongs to the National Trust. It stands in Knole Park, 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of deer park right on the south-east edge of Sevenoaks. By any measure it is among England's five largest houses, covering 4 acres in all. The house standing today began in the mid-15th century, and big additions came in the 16th and, above all, the early 17th century. Its Grade I listing reflects that blend of buildings from the late Middle Ages to the Stuarts, with its central façade and state rooms singled out. A major conservation scheme, Inspired by Knole, was finished in 2019.
