About St Mary's Church, Bridgwater
St Mary's is the principal Church of England parish church of Bridgwater in Somerset. It was first founded well before the Norman Conquest, but the large church standing today mostly belongs to the 14th and 15th centuries; there are older remains and later additions too. It is known for its Gothic architecture, its big stained glass windows and its spire, 174 feet high and the tallest medieval spire in Somerset, a county better known for tall towers. Nikolaus Pevsner called it "exceedingly elegant". Inside hangs a rare and very large painting of the Descent from the Cross; its artist is unknown, though it is often, and controversially, credited to Murillo or Carracci. It is Grade I listed and a Major Parish Church.
