About Clitheroe Castle
The ruins of this early medieval castle stand in Clitheroe, in Lancashire's Ribble Valley. It was the chief seat of the Honour of Clitheroe, a great estate on the Pennines' western flank. How it began is uncertain; it is thought to be Norman, probably of the twelfth century. It belonged to the de Lacy family, and the honour was later joined to the earldom, and afterwards the Duchy, of Lancaster. In 1660 the castle went to George Monck, the 1st Duke of Albemarle, and it remained privately owned until the people of Clitheroe bought it in 1920 as a war memorial. Its keep is England's second smallest surviving stone keep, and Clitheroe Castle Museum now occupies the site's buildings.
