About Portchester Castle
Portchester Castle, a medieval fortress, grew up inside the walls of Portus Adurni, a Roman fort of the Saxon Shore, at Portchester just east of Fareham in Hampshire. Its keep was probably raised as a baronial castle in the late eleventh century, and the crown took control of Portchester in 1154. King John liked to hunt from here, and in 1216 the French besieged and took it, though it soon came back to English hands. From its spot commanding Portsmouth Harbour, English kings set out on campaigns to France, and a plot against Henry V was uncovered here, an episode in Shakespeare's Henry V. It was later a prison. English Heritage now runs it.
