About Silver Jubilee Bridge
Linking Runcorn and Widnes in Halton, the Silver Jubilee Bridge crosses both the Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal where they pass through Runcorn Gap. First called the Runcorn–Widnes Bridge, and known locally as The Old Bridge, it is a steel through arch bridge whose main arch spans 361 yards (330 m). It opened in 1961, replacing the Widnes–Runcorn Transporter Bridge. After its roadway was widened in 1975–77 it took its official name, marking Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee. It carries the A533 and a cantilevered footway, and is Grade II listed. Closed to traffic for refurbishment when the Mersey Gateway Bridge opened, it was back in use in February 2021, now charging tolls.
