About Southwell Minster
Southwell Minster, in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, belongs to the Church of England and has strictly been called Southwell Cathedral since 1884. Its bishop is the bishop of Southwell and Nottingham. Oscytel, archbishop of York, built a church here in 956, and some late 11th-century fabric survives, but most of today's building was rebuilt in the Romanesque style between 1108 and about 1150. The chancel followed from 1234 to 1251 in Early English Gothic, and the chapter house of 1288 is carved with foliage of exceptional quality. In the Middle Ages the archbishop kept a palace beside the minster. It was collegiate until 1841 and a parish church until 1884, and it is Grade I listed.
