About Gateshead Millennium Bridge
The Gateshead Millennium Bridge carries people on foot and by bike across the River Tyne, linking the Quayside in Newcastle upon Tyne, on the north side, with Gateshead's arts quarter on the south side. No tilting bridge had ever been built before it. The architects WilkinsonEyre and the engineers Gifford designed it, and it opened to the public in 2001 and has since won awards. Its shape and the way it tilts have earned it the nicknames the Blinking Eye and the Winking Eye Bridge. It is 126 metres long, owned by Gateshead council, and lower than its neighbour, the Tyne Bridge.
