About Cyfarthfa Castle
Cyfarthfa Castle, in Park, Merthyr Tydfil, was home to the Crawshay family, ironmasters of the Cyfarthfa Ironworks, and it looked out over the valley and their works. Robert Lugar was its architect. Though castellated like a fortress, it is really a large house, with a big kitchen, bake house, dairy, billiard room, library and reception rooms, plus a brew house, an icehouse and cellars that once held over 15,000 bottles of wine and spirits and more than 7,500 bottles of port. The name loosely means place of barking in Welsh, after the hunting dogs once heard here. The Grade I listed castle stands in 158 acres (64 ha) of parkland, now Cyfarthfa Park, which Cadw/ICOMOS list as a historic park.
