En détail.

Special occasion: Christmas.

Snowy winter illustration of Southsea Castle, drawn from a real photograph: the scene under snow, with falling snow and a pale winter sky.

A winter drawing of Southsea Castle, made from a real photograph of the real place with a light fall of snow added for the season. The artwork is an AI interpretation, not a documentary photograph; details can differ from the original.

About Southsea Castle

Henry VIII built Southsea Castle on Portsea Island in 1544, one of the forts of his Device programme, guarding the Solent and Portsmouth's eastern side against a feared French and Imperial invasion. Its square keep, gun platforms and angled bastions made it one of England's first forts in the Italian bastioned style, the trace italienne. Henry himself appears visiting it in the Cowdray engraving, which records the Battle of the Solent of 1545. Parliamentary forces stormed it in 1642, it was redesigned in 1814 during the Napoleonic Wars, and it was back in use in the Second World War. In 1960 it was sold to Portsmouth City Council, then restored to how it looked before 1850 and opened to visitors.
