About Thornbury Castle
Thornbury Castle stands beside St Mary's parish church in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire. Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham, began it in 1511 as another residence alongside Stafford Castle. Despite the name it was never a true fortress but an early Tudor country house with few defences. Its symmetrical entrance range survives, with a gatehouse in the middle and an eight-sided tower at each corner. It is Grade I listed and is now a hotel.
