About Hoad Monument
The Hoad, properly the Sir John Barrow Monument, is a tower 100 feet (30 m) tall, built like a lighthouse, on top of Hoad Hill near Ulverston in Cumbria. The hill itself is 436 feet (133 m) high. The tower went up in 1850 and cost 1,250 pounds, most of it raised by public subscription. It honours Sir John Barrow, born in Ulverston in 1764, who died in 1848. Barrow helped found the Royal Geographical Society, served as a diplomat on journeys to China and South Africa, and from 1804 to 1845 held the Admiralty post of Second Secretary. The monument is Grade II* listed.
