About Furness Abbey
Furness Abbey, also known as St Mary of Furness, was a monastery a little north of Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria. Its story goes back to 1123. Before the English Reformation brought its dissolution, it ranked as the second richest and most powerful Cistercian house in the country, behind only Fountains Abbey. Several of its buildings are listed at Grade I in their own right, the site is a scheduled monument, and English Heritage looks after it.
