About Marple Aqueduct
Marple Aqueduct, also called Goyt Aqueduct, carries the Peak Forest Canal's lower level over the River Goyt at Marple, Greater Manchester, and it is England's highest aqueduct. Building started in 1795; by 1800 it was in service. A contractor on the main canal proposed iron troughs in place of stone arches, and the idea nearly went ahead, but once he had gone the stone design was kept. Frozen leaks through its clay lining led to repairs in 1860 and 1912, and in early 1962 part of a side wall fell. British Waterways wanted to pull it down as the cheaper choice, but Cheshire County Council helped pay for repairs, opening the way to the canal's restoration. It is now a scheduled monument and Grade I listed.
