About Ripon Cathedral
Ripon Cathedral, in Ripon, North Yorkshire, is dedicated to St Peter and St Wilfrid and grew from a monastery set up by monks following the Irish tradition in the 660s. St Wilfrid made it a Benedictine monastery in 672. In the tenth century it became a collegiate church, and for the rest of the Middle Ages it served as a mother church in the large Diocese of York. Today's building is the fourth church here, put up from the 13th to the 16th century. Known until 1836 as Ripon Minster, it became the Diocese of Ripon's cathedral that year. Its Geometric east window and Early English west front stand out, and it is Grade I listed.
