About Pittville Pump Room
Pittville Pump Room stands at the north end of Pittville Lawn in Cheltenham, its grounds sloping down to a lake. It was the town's final spa building, and its biggest. Joseph Pitt planned Pittville as a new town in the 1820s with a pump room at its heart, and the architect John Forbes built it between 1825 and 1830. Ionic columns run along the front, and three statues by Lucius Gahagen, put up in 1827, show Hygieia, Aesculapius and Hippocrates. Inside, the original marble and scagliola pump still serves the spa water, now raised by electric pumps. Pitt himself ended up bankrupt, and the council took over the building and grounds in 1890. It is Grade I listed and often hosts concerts, above all in the Cheltenham Music Festival.
